Educational development on smart campuses: a systematic literature review

There is a growing trend of studies on the subject of smart campuses around the world. However, unlike what happens with smart cities, which already have a formal and global concept, no universal definition of smart campus has been established so far in the literature. Furthermore, in the available works, the projects for the characterization of an intelligent campus, the pillars for its development, as well as concrete and measurable evidence that in fact these projects have a positive impact on the students' learning process, are still dispersed and/ or are non-existent. In this sense, this article seeks, through a systematic literature review (SLR), to survey projects and/or areas where efforts are concentrated for the development of smart campuses. For this the Web of Science knowledge base was chosen. The articles from the last three years were then classified, selected, analyzed and, later, each one was discussed, and, finally, its main characteristics were presented. The results indicate that China is the country with the highest percentage of published works on smart campuses, that most of the articles evaluated adopt Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and the Internet of Things (IoT) as a starting point for projects. involving smart campuses, that smart learning is the most cited pillar for the development and management of smart campuses and that none of the 27 articles in this review presented concrete evidence that smart campus projects demonstrated measurable educational results for the learning of the academic student community.
